The formation of WAAIBWS marks a new era of collaboration, professional growth, and shared purpose among IB schools across West Africa.
The 2025 IB Global Conference in The Hague commenced with a momentous occasion — the official launch of the West Africa Association of IB World Schools (WAAIBWS), the first-ever Sub-Saharan IB association. This achievement represents years of collaboration and dedication among IB schools across West Africa, united by a shared vision to strengthen regional cooperation and advance the IB mission on the continent. Representing the association, Mr. Richard Sarpong, Vice Principal 1 at SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College (SOS-HGIC), received the official certificate of recognition, marking a significant milestone in the growth and influence of the IB community in Africa.
The conference highlighted the importance of diversity, collaboration, and innovation in education. During the plenary session on Day 2, Dr. Kairu B. Kamau, IB Development & Recognition Manager for Africa, served as emcee and introduced keynote speaker Dr. Benson, whose address deeply inspired participants across the region. In his thought-provoking remarks, Dr. Benson reflected on the enduring spirit of educators, reminding all that “As educators, you don’t run out of kindness, you don’t run out of compassion, you don’t run out of empathy, but you do run out of time.”
The establishment of WAAIBWS strengthens the IB’s regional infrastructure and provides West African IB schools with enhanced opportunities for collaboration, professional development, and shared best practices. We extend our appreciation to the leadership and thank the following members, Mrs. Eliz Dadson, Mrs. Elisa Naoum, Mr. Taid Rahimi, Mrs. Adzo Ashie, Ms. Ayeshat Awudu, Ms. Yvonne Tagoe, Ms. Ariane Baer-Harper, Ms. Siwar Ben Romdhane, Mr. Olli-Pekka Heinonen, Mr. Ishmael Twum Odoom, Dr. Helen Chatburn-Ojehomon (Ed.D.), and Mr. Harwell Asorwoe for their role in advancing the IB mission across Africa.
